Amy Biehl Community School is holding a schoolwide reading of the book Matilda! Because Matilda is much smarter than the adults around her, a few 5th graders at Amy Biehl challenged some adults to "Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?" The students dominated the adults by a final score of 2,600-1,400.

That feeling when your Monster comes to life! 1st graders at Salazar drew monsters, which were then passed along to Dr. Gerstein's 5th graders, who brought them to life! Students used felt, filled them with stuffing and sewed them together with yarn! The 5th graders then interviewed the 1st graders about their monsters. They took the audio from the interview and coded the monsters with Makey Makey so when the students touched parts of the monster, it repeated part of their interview! To learn more about the project, you can visit Dr. Gerstein's blog about the project here: https://usergeneratededucation.wordpress.com/2023/03/04/monster-project-using-makey-makeys-and-scratch/

Last Friday, local Santa Fe artist Bobby Beals visited Amy Biehl Community School to teach kids about his career as an artist, curator, skater and designer! He showed students some of his custom skateboards and shirts from his company Kamagraph. He then taught students how he screen prints his shirts by hand, and even let a few kids make some shirts of their own! Students took that knowledge and began to use a Skateboard template in Art class and create their art pieces. While they work on that in Art, in STEM class they will create the Graphic User Interface (GUI) of their app using the MIT App Inventor. Next week, they will code and debug the app and will have 3 main screens, one of the art, one with them and their art, and one page with their inspiration! Thank you Bobby for coming!

Last week, LANL brought their traveling STEM experience, called Challenge Tomorrow, to Capital High School to showcase some of the Los Alamos National Laboratory's diverse research, innovations and people to communities in New Mexico! Students got a chance to learn about some of the many things that they do at LANL! They got their hands dirty learning about irrigation, got to build a block tower with a robot arm and so much more! Thank you to Carolina Tavarez, the site coordinator for College and Career Plaza at Capital, for setting up this amazing experience for students!

During a recent SFHS NJROTC Orientation trip to California, the cadets were eating dinner at Golden Corral when they left their seats and went to sit with an elderly woman. They saw she was carrying a bowl of ice cream and an ice cream cone to her table, and noticed that when she sat down there was only one drink. She was sitting by herself. She placed the bowl of ice cream across from her and then started eating her cone. One cadet grabbed a couple of other cadets and went to sit with her. When it was time to go, Chief Shipp walked to the table and met the woman, whose name was Danette, to let them know about the departure. Danette said “Hello, are you the mom of all of these kids?” The cadets and the Chief laughed, but she could tell that they had been talking about a range of subjects from the serious to lighthearted. The Chief watched as the cadets helped her up from her chair and one by one, all gave her a hug then grabbed some photos to commemorate their time with Danette. The cadets proceeded to walk with Danette to her car and get her settled (she wanted to get home before dark). While talking with Danette, the cadets found out her husband was a WWII veteran who had just passed away a month ago - the ice cream bowl was for him. The fact that our cadets took notice of what was happening around them then acted on it unprompted with nothing but respect, honor, and kindness is a testimony to the caliber of SFHS cadets that the Chief and Commander are creating in our NJROTC. Great job Cadets, we are proud of you!
