Acequia Madre Elementary School was recognized today, September 16th, as a 2022 National Blue Ribbon School by U. S. Secretary of Education Dr. Miguel Cardona for improving academic performance. Principal Dr. Dietger De Maeseneer has led the school since July 2021, taking the helm after Kathy Casaus, who served as principal from June 2018 to 2021, was named assistant superintendent with oversight for the school.

Secretary Dr. Cardona said, "I applaud all the honorees for the 2022 National Blue Ribbon Schools Award for creating vibrant, welcoming, and affirming school communities where students can learn, grow, reach their potential, and achieve their dreams.”

Superintendent Hilario "Larry" Chavez said, “This is a thrilling moment for Acequia Madre Elementary School and the entire school district community. As is evidenced by this prestigious national honor, Acequia Madre has never faltered in its commitment to high academic standards, doing all it can to engage students and families in learning through a creative arts curriculum.  It is a model for the state and nation.  We are deeply proud of the school's outstanding leaders, including Principal Dr. De Maeseneer and Assistant Superintendent Casaus, and its teachers, parents, students and staff. Please join me in applauding their excellence in education and dedication to students being educationally successful, physically sound, socially aware and artistically inspired."

“I am pleased that Acequia Madre is receiving a Blue Ribbon School award.  They are to be congratulated for the exemplary education they offer to their students!” said SFPS Board of Education Member Dr. Carmen Gonzales, who represents the school.

"Coming out of a global pandemic with a Blue Ribbon award is an astonishing achievement. It serves as a testimony to the excellence we are committed to at Acequia Madre even during the most challenging of times. Together we stand tall!" said Principal Dr. De Maeseneer.

“When you walk through the doors of Acequia Madre, you can immediately feel the excitement and love of learning emanating through the building. The team’s dedication to incorporate meaningful experiences through visual and performing art, music, technology and environmental awareness provides a better future for our students and our community,” said Assistant Superintendent Casaus.

The U.S. Department of Education said that the National Blue Ribbon School Award affirms and validates the hard work of students, educators, families and communities in striving for – and attaining – exemplary achievement.  Acequia Madre is one of 297 schools nationally to receive the honor for 2022.
