Superintendent Hilario “Larry” Chavez announced today, January 11th, that John Salazar has been named head football coach for the Capital High School (CHS) Jaguars. Salazar is a CHS alumnus and three season assistant CHS head coach and offensive coordinator. He replaces Coach Joaquin Garcia, who served as the head coach for three years.
“Coach Salazar’s extensive leadership experience in the community, integrated with his passion for football and dedication to promoting personal and academic growth, makes him the perfect candidate for head football coach of Capital High School. He is committed to mentoring all student athletes both on and off the field,” said Superintendent Hilario “Larry” Chavez. “With three seasons of mentorship under Coach Garcia and his qualifications, we have total confidence in Coach Salazar to build on the successes of the program in future seasons,” he said.
Deputy Superintendent Kristy Wagner, who is serving as SFPS athletic director, said, “Coach Garcia leaves a strong foundation for the football program, with a roster of returning athletes ready to take Jaguar football to the next level. We are thankful for the expertise and mentorship Coach Garcia was able to provide Coach Salazar during his tenure."
Coach Salazar said, “I am incredibly grateful to Superintendent Chavez for providing me with the opportunity to coach football at my alma mater. I would also like to extend my heartfelt appreciation to Coach Joaquin Garcia for his invaluable mentorship and guidance, which has greatly contributed to my growth as a coach. I am excited about the opportunity to collaborate with Principal Jaime Holladay and the teachers at Capital High School in the development of our student athletes. This position is truly a dream come true for me, and I am eagerly anticipating the opportunity to continue working with the students as their head coach. I would also like to express my gratitude to my wife and family for their unwavering support and love, both for me and for the program. I am filled with excitement as I take on the responsibility of leading this program and steering it towards a successful future on and off the field.”
Coach Salazar, who holds a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and is a special education teacher at CHS, has a combined seven seasons as an assistant football coach and is also a certified crossfit level 1 trainer and CHS’ head powerlifting coach.
