Maeghan McCormick

Superintendent Hilario “Larry” Chavez announced today, August 8th, the appointment of Maeghan McCormick as principal of César Chávez Elementary School.  McCormick, who has served as English language coach in SFPS’ Language & Culture Department since 2019, brings specialized expertise in language acquisition to César Chávez, where 58 percent of students are English Language Learners (ELLs).

“I’m excited to announce the appointment of Maeghan McCormick as principal of César Chávez Elementary School.  As an English language development expert, she is adept at improving English learner instructional practice and supporting multilingual learners.  Her leadership will further ensure high expectations for all students,” said Superintendent Chavez.  “With César Chávez one of seven SFPS school improvement focus schools this year, her appointment is occurring at an especially opportune time,” he said.

McCormick said, “I am honored to serve the community in this new capacity as principal of César Chávez Elementary School. I am excited to join the team of talented educators and staff members in the work of engaging students with high expectations while providing the equitable support that they deserve. I am dedicated to developing high-quality programs in neighborhood schools that empower students from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds.”

From 2015 to 2019, McCormick taught Spanish (Level I, II, III, IV and A.P. Spanish Language and Culture) at The Academy for Technology and the Classics in Santa Fe, where she was English Language Development (TESOL) instructor for grades 7-12 and advised staff on ELL differentiation strategies.  She also taught Spanish at Tierra Encantada Charter School (2012-2015) in Santa Fe and East Mountain High School (2009-2012) in Sandia Park,  maintaining a full inclusion model at both schools.   

McCormick holds a Bachelor of Arts in Spanish from the University of New Mexico (UNM) (2008) and a Master of Arts in Secondary Education with a Language Acquisition Concentration from UNM (2009).
