Bryan Cruz, bilingual first grade teacher at Ramirez Thomas Elementary, found his place at SFPS
Bryan Cruz, a bilingual first grade teacher at Ramirez Thomas Elementary, took a different journey than most into the Santa Fe Public Schools (SFPS).
Cruz, who spend his formative years moving between the United States and Mexico, decided during his senior year in college to pursue a degree in education in addition to the engineering degree he’d been working toward for three years.
“My family is full of educators, and they’ve supported me since day one,” Cruz said. “I ended up in Santa Fe because my dad and my brother were here working as teachers. My brother worked at Pinon Elementary, and my father worked at Sweeney Elementary.”
He started in the district as a substitute teacher before finding his home at Ramirez Thomas Elementary. In his classroom, Cruz teaches English Language Learner (ELL) students' first grade curriculum in both English and Spanish.
“Teaching a first-grade bilingual class is not just about imparting knowledge, it is about fostering curiosity, diversity and nurturing a love of learning in two languages spoken,” Cruz said. “I believe my job as a bilingual educator is to keep that heritage with the students.”
Cruz explained that sometimes ELL students grow up speaking Spanish with their families but as they assimilate into American schools, they lose some of their language and culture.
“But here in school, we do our best to teach them in their home language,” said Cruz. “Parents and grandparents come to me and thank me for teaching them in their home language because they felt like they were losing that with their child. It’s very emotional to see them build their language again.”
In his sixth year at Ramirez Thomas Elementary, Cruz said what he likes most about working for SFPS is the collaborative environment the district fosters.
“My former principal was an amazing leader and now our current principal, Charlotte Ault, is amazing, too,” Cruz said. “Besides that, I enjoy living in Santa Fe. When I moved here, I was single and didn’t have any (extended) family here. I started my life in Santa Fe – I got married, my children were born here – so it’s a whole new, different journey now.”
While his journey was unique, Cruz found the place he belongs at SFPS and in Santa Fe.

Bryan Cruz, maestro bilingüe de primer grado en la Primaria Ramirez Thomas, encontró su lugar en SFPS
Bryan Cruz, maestro bilingüe de primer grado en la escuela primaria Ramírez Thomas, emprendió un viaje diferente al de la mayoría hacia las Escuelas Públicas de Santa Fe (SFPS).
Cruz, quien pasó sus años de formación moviéndose entre Estados Unidos y México, decidió durante su último año en la universidad obtener un título en educación además del título de ingeniería en el que había estado trabajando durante tres años.
“Mi familia está llena de educadores y ellos me han apoyado desde el primer día”, dijo Cruz. “Terminé en Santa Fe porque mi papá y mi hermano estaban aquí trabajando como profesores. Mi hermano trabajaba en la primaria Pinon y mi padre trabajaba en la primaria Sweeney”.
Comenzó en el distrito como maestro sustituto antes de encontrar su hogar en la escuela primaria Ramirez Thomas. En su salón de clases, Cruz enseña el plan de estudios de primer grado de los estudiantes que aprenden inglés (ELL), tanto en inglés como en español.
“Dar una clase bilingüe de primer grado no se trata sólo de impartir conocimientos, sino de fomentar la curiosidad, la diversidad y fomentar el amor por aprender en dos idiomas hablados”, dijo Cruz. “Creo que mi trabajo como educador bilingüe es mantener esa herencia con los estudiantes”.
Cruz explicó que a veces los estudiantes ELL crecen hablando español con sus familias, pero a medida que se asimilan en las escuelas estadounidenses, pierden parte de su idioma y cultura.
“Pero aquí en la escuela hacemos todo lo posible para enseñarles en su idioma materno”, dijo Cruz. “Los padres y abuelos vienen a mí y me agradecen por enseñarles en su idioma materno porque sentían que estaban perdiendo eso con sus hijos. Es muy emotivo verlos construir su lenguaje nuevamente”.
En su sexto año en la Primaria Ramirez Thomas, Cruz dijo que lo que más le gusta de trabajar para SFPS es el ambiente de colaboración que fomenta el distrito.
“Mi ex directora era una líder increíble y ahora nuestra directora actual, Charlotte Ault, también es increíble”, dijo Cruz. “Además de eso, disfruto vivir en Santa Fe. Cuando me mudé aquí, era soltero y no tenía ninguna familia (extendida) aquí. Comencé mi vida en Santa Fe, me casé, mis hijos nacieron aquí, así que ahora es un viaje completamente nuevo y diferente”.
Si bien su viaje fue único, Cruz encontró el lugar al que pertenece en SFPS y en Santa Fe.
