Capital High School's Scooby Team, named first place winner in the Congressional App Challenge, shared their project, a robotic gunshot detection system, on Capitol Hill on April 11th. The team, along with other first place winners from Congressional districts around the country, demonstrated their app at the #HouseOfCode celebration, also called a national science fair, at the U.S. Capitol Building, where they met with Congresswoman Teresa Leger Fernandez and connected with other coders nationwide.
The seven students on the Scooby Team include Team Captain Edward Scott, Craig Andree Abajo, Raul Alvarado, Jesse Burch, Haize Christiansen, Jordan Lam and Britny Marquez.
"It was a pleasure to meet Craig Andree Abajo, Jesse Burch and Haize Christiansen of Capital High School and their dedicated teacher, Barbara Teterycz. They represented New Mexico and Santa Fe Public Schools wonderfully at the #HouseOfCode demonstration at the U.S Capitol," said Michele Adams, Albert Einstein distinguished educator fellow with Congresswoman Leger Fernandez's office, in correspondence to Superintendent Hilario "Larry" Chavez.
"We were very impressed with their winning app--Scooby. It was an honor to observe their project that highlights a struggle that students across the country face daily--gun violence in schools. Thank you again for your dedication to these wonderful STEM students and sharing them with us. It was truly a pleasure to see their innovative minds and talents on display as they shared their app with lawmakers, sponsors and the public here in Washington, D.C.," Adams said.
The visit to Washington, D.C. was one of several honors for the team in 2023-24. In January, the team was selected as a State Finalist in the 2023-2024 “Samsung Solve for Tomorrow” STEM contest. Then it was selected by LANL as one of the winning teams in the Governor's STEM Challenge held in January. The Scooby Team also participated in STEAM Day at the legislature on February 1st.
The team’s sponsoring teachers are Teterycz and Irina Cislaru. David Ritter is the team’s industry mentor.

La visita a Washington, D.C. fue uno de varios honores para el equipo en 2023-24. En enero, el equipo fue seleccionado como finalista estatal en el concurso STEM “Samsung Solve for Tomorrow” 2023-2024. Luego fue seleccionado por LANL como uno de los equipos ganadores en el Desafío STEM del Gobernador celebrado en enero. El equipo Scooby también participó en el Día STEAM en la legislatura el 1 de febrero.
