A Partnership is Born

A Partnership is Born

By Rae Hoffacker
Embedded in the Request for Proposal for the federal grant was an expectation that 21st CCLC recipients develop a relationship with community partners.  As a result of that challenge, I met with several of the community partners to discuss the expectation and to determine if and how they wished to participate in this grant process

I had a series of meetings with Irene Lee and Paige Prescott about GUTS and from that discussion came the concept of embedding CODE.ORG into the 21st CCLC programming in the early grades to build capacity among the younger students.

I also had a series of meetings with Cooking with Kids.  They had had some changes at their level and did not have the staff to go into 14 schools. As a result, the concept of training the staff emerged.  The Train the Teacher model will allow their organization to grow and the sites are not dependent on their staff schedules.

The unique partnership between the Santa Fe Community Educators Network (SFCEN) and the Santa Fe Public Schools came from a vision that Molly Parsons, at Santa Fe Botanical Garden, had when SFPS asked if the Botanical Garden would participate and support in the 21st CCLC grant application.

Molly suggested that she ask the SFCEN if they wanted to participate.  The response to that request was very supportive and the partners were excited to be able to provide high quality and engaging after school opportunities for the community.  A series of meeting occurred to discuss the how and develop the curriculum.  Each of the partners wanted to be able to reach as many of the schools and students as they could and this was an opportunity for them to meet the expectations of their organizations and to serve the community.  As we were going to have one day of training, Cooking with Kids and CODE.ORG were included.

The Museum of International Folk Art stepped up to provide the space and the additional staff to accommodate the nearly 150 teachers who attended. The Udall building housed the others.

The evaluations are still being compiled and we have some things that could be improved, but the programs and curriculum are being implemented into the sites.  And that is the best evaluation tool.
