Parent Information

It is the parent or guardian's responsibility to notify your school nurse directly about any medical conditions or changes in medical status. Because we care, we want your students to be in school and to be healthy too!  Studies show that children who practice good health habits experience fewer sick days.

Some ways to keep your children healthy are to encourage:

  • Regular hand washing
  • Plenty of sleep
  • Daily physical activity
  • Covering coughs and sneezes with elbows
  • Nutritious food, especially fruits and vegetables

When to Stay Home

It is sometimes hard to know if a child is too sick to attend school. Children with the following should stay home:
  • Fevers of 100 degrees or higher
  • Vomiting or diarrhea due to illness
Bringing a child to school with any of these symptoms puts others at risk of getting sick. Students with fever should not return to school until the fever has been gone for 24 hours, without the use of fever reducing medication.  Some of the decision to send your child to school, or not, depends on your child’s energy level and ability to participate in school.   Students with mild congestion, sore throat, or cough – without fever – can usually attend school.

Medications at School

Please contact your school nurse if your child needs medicine at school. DO NOT send medications to school with your child. Parents must personally deliver medications to the school nurse in their original container, and sign required consent forms.

By state law, all students must be up-to-date on their immunizations to attend public school.  A current immunization record or religious/medical exemption form (updated yearly) must be on file for each student. The Santa Fe Public School nurses are able to administer vaccines at school, if you sign a consent form. This is a public health service intended to minimize the spread of childhood diseases.

Keep Your Information Current

If your child becomes ill at school, or is injured, we will need to contact a parent.  We ask that you please inform the school any time there is a change in your phone number and/or emergency contacts.  In addition, you must speak to your school nurse directly about all medical conditions or changes in child’s health status.

Thank you for doing your part in keeping your children healthy and in school!
