Can I afford college?

At SFCC, we believe every student who wants to go to college should be able to do so. That’s why we work hard to help you afford the cost of your education. There are scholarships, grants, campus jobs and loan programs — all available to help pay your college expenses. Learn more at, or by calling (505) 428-1268. Grants- Take a look at our main Grants Page to find out about funds available to undergraduate students who have financial need and meet other requirements.

  • Financial Aid for Certificate Programs- SFCC offers 21 Certificate Programs that qualify for Financial Aid. Please visit our Grants web page to see eligible certificates.
  • Loans- At SFCC, we work primarily with Direct Subsidized and Direct Unsubsidized loans. Discover what that means on our Loans Homepage, and get detailed information on eligibility, limits and dependency status.

Do I need a Social Security number to apply for financial aid?

You do not need to have a social security number to apply for financial aid. If you do not have a social security number, please visit the Santa Fe Community College’s financial aid office. You will receive and complete a paper form for financial aid eligibility. If you have any questions, please contact Meghan McGarrity, Scholarship Coordinator, at (505) 428-1281.

How do I know I am college ready?

SFCC provides placement testing at no charge. Take Accuplacer in the Testing Center – Room 611. No appointment is needed, and there is no cost; but you will need a photo ID such as a driver’s license or state ID card and a student ID number (also called your A#).

The Testing Center is open 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Mondays and Tuesdays, and 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. You are strongly encouraged to prepare for your placement test. Free study guides are available at the Testing Center and the Welcome and Advising Center, or can be downloaded from (select the link for “Placement Testing”). Allow at least two hours to complete the evaluation (there is no time limit). Placement results are usually available immediately. If you have college transcripts and ACT/SAT scores, the Testing Center might be able to use them to determine appropriate placement.

What is Dual Credit?

Dual Credit allows high school students currently attending eligible area high schools to enroll in SFCC for fall or spring courses. The student receives both college and high school credit allowing them to apply the credits to their high school graduation requirements. SFCC Community Outreach staff works with high school counselors who determine students for dual credit. Outreach staff then registers students into course sections that are open. Grades earned through dual credit are posted on students’ permanent high school and college transcripts.
