Fifteen Mandela International Magnet School students have earned prestigious International Baccalaureate (IB) Diplomas, representing a pass rate of 94%. This compares to a global pass rate of 80%.

“The prestigious IB Diploma recognizes students’ strong academic performance. We congratulate these students for their outstanding achievement and Mandela’s entire school community for supporting them on this journey,” said Superintendent Hilario “Larry” Chavez. “Exceeding the global pass rate is a testament to Mandela’s excellence in learning,” he said.

The 15 students demonstrated strong academic performance in six areas--Language & Literature, Language Acquisition, History, Experimental Sciences, Mathematics and the Arts.

“Each one of these courses is essentially a two-year college level endeavor and earning the full IB Diploma is something that requires commitment, setting priorities and a strong work ethic,” said Randy Grillo, Mandela Principal/Head Learner. “We are so proud of these students and their ability to show that even a year of virtual learning and the uncertainty of a once-in-a-lifetime pandemic would not blur their focus. Our staff deserves special recognition for their solidarity and dedication to each student’s success, as does the Santa Fe Public Schools administration,” he said.

The recipients are Haley Ammerman, Niveditha Bala, Isabella Clark, Angelina Como-Mosconi, Jammes Crowther, Gabriella Ervin, Cobin Hall, Raymond Heil, Cliodhna O'Connell, Angel Santiago Perez, Shelby Peterson, Xitlalitl Rodas, Theodore Standridge, Miles Teng-Levy and Jayna Varghese. They join 11 Mandela graduates who earned the diploma in the previous two years.

Earning IB certificates that demonstrate strong performance in specific areas are Eric Cool, Mandarin, History, Music; Monchanau Curliss, Language & Literature, History, Theatre; Jessica Hernandez-Monsalvo, Language & Literature, Spanish; Jesse Merchant, Spanish, History, Biology, Visual Arts; Brian Morales, Language & Literature, Spanish, History, Visual Arts; Allison Pereira-Leon, Spanish; Cordelia Russell, Language & Literature, Spanish; and Max Wiemer, Language & Literature, History.
