Superintendent Dr. Veronica C. Garcia and incoming Superintendent Hilario “Larry” Chavez announced today that Amanda Chavez has been hired as director of special education starting on July 1st.  Ms. Chavez has served as principal of César Chávez Community School since 2018.  In addition, Fernando Morales was named as the new principal at César Chávez Community School for 2021-2022.  Mr. Morales has served as assistant principal at the school.   Mr. Chavez also announced the retirement on June 30th of Julie Lucero, executive director of special education.

“Ms. Chavez will provide a seamless transition for students and families served through special education, remaining focused on ensuring that every student can thrive.  With experience as a principal and special education teacher, she knows first hand the critical importance of meeting all students’ educational needs and how to adapt content and teaching methods to further learning,” said incoming Superintendent Chavez.

Ms. Lucero has provided great leadership in an area of education that at times is extremely difficult. We thank her for all of her hard work, time, effort and unique ability to oversee a department with finesse and care. She will be missed and we thank her for her service to SFPS,” said Superintendent Dr. Garcia.

Ms. Chavez said, “In my 14 years in education a lot of my experience was in special education, my heart and passion have been tied to this field. Although I will deeply miss César Chávez Elementary School and the amazing team there, I’m very excited to dive into the field of special education and dedicate my whole self to this department.”

In addition to serving as principal at Cesar Chavez, Ms. Chavez was assistant principal from 2017-2018 and has taught general and special education in Albuquerque and Santa Fe.  She was a special education teacher, special education contact teacher and 21st Century Community Learning Center site coordinator at Amy Biehl Community School in SFPS.  She holds double bachelor degrees from the University of New Mexico in general education and special education, with a minor in math, and a master’s degree in educational leadership from Grand Canyon University.
Mr. Morales has served at César Chávez for 14 years, including as assistant principal and as the school’s interventionist.  He began as a 2nd-grade teacher, taught 4th grade, then assumed the K-5 technology teacher position at the school.  He holds a bachelor's degree in political science from New Mexico Highlands University and a master's degree from the College of Santa Fe with a focus on at-risk youth.

Mr. Morales said, “I am humbled and honored to lead the school community, where I began my teaching career.  Our students deserve the best of us and I am excited to work with our community and all stakeholders.  I am committed to academic, lifelong learning, and continuing many of the programs and progress we have made under the leadership of Ms. Amanda Chavez.  I am thrilled to begin this new chapter in my career and be the leader of my home and heart, César Chávez Elementary White Tigers, where all students are first!”
