Santa Fe Public Schools Emergency Management

Emergency Management is a science that combines comprehensive knowledge of all issues, standards and guidelines related to emergency preparedness and management, including National Incident Management System and Incident Command System.  SFPS employs an Emergency Management Specialist who works to provide a safe working environment for all district staff, students, and visitors to all SFPS schools and offices.  The SFPS OEM is responsible for making sure the District complies with all Federal, State, and municipal mandates in regards to Incident Response, Incident Management, the National Incident Management System (NIMS) and the Incident Command System (ICS). 

Current essential functions include but are not limited to the following:

  1.  Propose and develop information, policies and procedures related to incident response, emergency preparedness and mitigation based up Emergency Management industry best practices and standards..
  2. Ensures that state mandated emergency drills (shelter in place, lockdown, off site evacuation) are conducted at all school and office sites annually. Ensures that state mandated fire drills are conducted at all school and office sites annually.
  3. Develops emergency preparedness plans, trains personnel, and regularly evaluates and updates the plans.
  4. Communicates regularly with school administrators, law enforcement agencies and the Santa Fe city/county fire department.
  5. Helps identify ways to engage students and parents in emergency preparedness.
  6. Updates SFPS parent/student handbook with necessary safety/security information insuring bilingual content.

All New Mexico schools are required by the NM State Legislature (NMAC 6.29.1.N) to preform certain drills every year. Under NMAC, SFPS is required to do 9 fire drills, 2 Shelter-in-Place, 1 Lockdown, and 1 Off-Site Evacuation. These drills are scheduled so that Principals can have them without seriously impacting the learning day for students and teachers. They are also done to ensure that all students and staff are well trained and prepared for any threat to school safety that may arise during a typical school day. 


Each SFPS school site has a trained Incident Response Team.  These specially trained staff members have been through about 9 hours of intense emergency response training both online and in the classroom.  This training allows staff members to practice and prepare for a variety of possibilities that could threaten their schools' safety.
