Substitute Teaching in SFPS

Dear Prospective Substitute Teacher:

Thank you for your interest in Santa Fe Public Schools. Substitute teachers provide a valuable service to our students and district, and we appreciate your efforts in providing a quality instructional program in the absence of the classroom teacher. Please apply now and encourage a friend to serve the community through "subbing" today. It's a great way to make a difference in the lives of students in Santa Fe Public Schools!

Three different categories of substitute exist: daily, long term, and permanent. Permanent positions are contracted 9-month positions assigned to only one school site, and these positions are advertised by school location on Applitrack.

Qualifications to be a substitute teacher may be found at New Mexico Public Education Department's website.

The process for becoming a substitute:
  • If the district considers your application for a substitute position, a phone interview will be completed.
  • If recommended for position, you will be notified of the next steps in the process (background, paperwork, license).
  • Attend a new hire orientation for Substitute Teachers.
Individuals not holding a teaching license may take the SubEssentials course on becoming a substitute teacher. You'll learn what is expected and what you can do to prepare.  Learn more about available courses and training at:

We look forward to having you in our classrooms.
