New Teacher Mentoring Overview

The purpose of the teacher mentorship program is to provide beginning teachers with an effective transition into the teaching field, to build on their initial preparation and to ensure their success in teaching; to improve the achievement of students; and to retain capable teachers in the classroom and to remove teachers who show little promise of success.

SFPS and NMPED Mentoring Requirement

As a new teacher to the SFPS District, you will be required by state statute to participate in a SFPS mandatory mentorship program for one full year as an Intern or Level I licensed teacher. Completion of the mentorship program is part of advancing from level 1 licensure to level 2 licensure.
The SFPS new teacher mentorship program includes two components:
  • Observation/feedback  and support that the teacher may need
  • 9 - Two hour sessions of Mentor Circle professional instruction over the course of the school year.

If you have any questions or concerns regarding PED requirements or your personal status, please contact the Mentor Coordinator or Human Resources.
