Curriculum & Instruction
Overview

The Department of Curriculum and Instruction oversees Pre-K through grade 12 core program deliveries, including English language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies. Program oversight also includes the areas of federal programs, Response to Intervention (RtI), new teacher mentoring, AVID, professional development, art, music, physical education, and school libraries. The department operates a number of programs outside of the school day/year, including the K-3 Plus and Smart Start Pre-K programs, Title 1 funded summer academic programs and after school programs.

The Department serves as the central contact point for the SFPS district’s and school sites’ Educational Plan for Student Success (EPSS), federal grant applications, budgets for Title I, Title II, 21st Century, K-3 Plus and Smart Start, Pre-K programs, and Carl Perkins.

Staff of the Department of Curriculum and Instruction works to engage district staff in professional dialogue and work outside of the classroom, through various activities focused on aligning and continually updating instruction and programs to standards. Our most recent example of this was the planning and facilitation of the 2012 Common Core State Standards Teacher Summer Institute. Approximately 140 K-12 teachers representing all elementary, community, middle, and high schools were brought together for a 12 day institute. Participants received deliberate professional development by the Dana Center at UT-Austin and others, focused on the Common Core State Standards and the WIDA English Language Development Standards. Grade level teams then developed K-12 YAGs (Year at a Glance) and Curricular Frameworks for both ELA and mathematics. This work is currently being piloted (SY 2012-2013) and this group of teachers will be brought together summer 2013 to refine the work, begin developing assessments and revising the District’s standards based progress reports.
