Gabe Romero, Director of School Security

Gabe Romero

Gabe Romero has been the Director of School Security for Santa Fe Public Schools since 2012. He is responsible for the District’s physical security systems, school emergency preparedness, security officers, crossing guards, and implementation of security protocols throughout the District.

Gabe Romero is a retired New Mexico State Police Captain with 22 years of law enforcement experience.  During his tenure with the New Mexico State Police he served as the first New Mexico Department of Public Safety Homeland Security Director.  He is a graduate of Northwestern University’s School of Staff and Command and obtained a Bachelor of Science Degree in Applied Management.  He served in the United States Marine Corps in the 1980s, and worked with security forces as a police advisor in Afghanistan during 2008 and 2009.

Maria-Lisa Dilda, MA, Emergency Management Specialist
Maria-Lisa DildaMrs. Dilda has lived in Santa Fe, NM for 12 years and has lived in several countries prior to coming here from North Carolina.  She holds a Master of Arts degree from the Andrews University School of Education and has a long  history of working in the field of Emergency Response.  With over 13 years of service through the Official Auxiliary of the United States Air Force, Civil Air Patrol (current rank of Major), she has gained a comprehensive knowledge base of all standards and guidelines related to Incident Management and Response.  

She has extensive experience in the use of FEMA Incident Command System, mandated by the US Department of Education for school incident response and has created Response plans and training programs to help prepare others in incident response using this system.  Mrs. Dilda also has many years of teaching experience gained in classrooms from elementary through high school in Michigan and New Mexico.  Her knowledge of how schools function helps her address the needs of students, staff, and community members in regard to their safety. With a passion for developing a safety culture for SFPS, Mrs. Dilda has brought our safety policies up-to-date by implementing current best practices.  She also holds approximately 15 certifications in this field from FEMA’s ECI training institute.   She also volunteers as support to the NM Department of Homeland Security, Emergency Management during exercises to help keep our state operating at a high level of safety proficiency.

Margaret Romero, School Security Support Specialist
Maggie Romero is the Support Specialist that handles the infrastructure security issues.  She works with the Director to make sure schools and other SFPS facilities are kept secure by managing the electronic systems like door locks and alarm schedules, access, and keys.  She works with each school to manage hours of accessibility and special needs.  Maggie has a lot of school site experience as she spent several years as the De Vargas Middle School secretary.  Maggie is very committed to making sure that all staff and students are safe at school.
