Superintendent's Welcome Back Message

Welcome to a new school year!  Santa Fe’s public schools reflect what makes the city so special! We are culturally rich and diverse. Like Santa Fe, we are a sanctuary and a welcoming school district. As city traditions change and new ones emerge, we seek better understanding and respect in our schools, our mission guides us, ever mindful that unity is strength, learning is everything and dreams are unlimited.

During my first year with Santa Fe Public Schools, we engaged you, our stakeholders, to define our Northstar, which has become our core beliefs.  These beliefs will help guide us as we work to ensure that we are truly providing educational opportunities for our students that meet the needs of our community.

We believe:

  • in championing public education as a fundamental right for every child
  • students are the heart of what we do and teaching and learning are at the core of our work
  • in creating strong and committed relationships among students, staff, families and community
  • in high expectations for all
  • in celebrating our diversity in a nurturing and safe environment
  • successful schools are engaging, collaborative, joyful and inspiring and in ethical and respectful leadership

This year, I'm excited to unveil Project: Team Santa Fe! We've reorganized district leadership in a manner to provide increased support to principals so they may more fully fulfill the role of instructional leader and better support teachers in the classroom.  Working together across classrooms, schools and neighborhoods, we can fulfill our promise to the community and to our students to reinforce the love of teaching and learning and instill the critical essentials of lifelong success. Together Everyone Achieves More!!

Our number one priority is to ensure that students leave our schools with the academic and social skills they need to be successful. This is best accomplished in SFPS through a comprehensive commitment to honing the attributes our community has deemed necessary in our graduates. While there are many layers to accomplish this, one is to ensure we recruit and retain dynamic educators and staff. After working closely with our National Education Association (NEA) representatives, I am happy to report that our teachers, on average, will be receiving a 4.8% raise this year, far exceeding the 2.5% legislative mandated increase in salaries. This is a step in the right direction. I commit that our District will continue to advocate for improved compensation for all employees.

Thank you for choosing SFPS and your service to the children and their families and our community. I wish you a great 2018-2019 school year!
